Suggested Clothing & Packing List (Modified from Tink's Austin list if this sounds familiar)

- Toiletries, medications and all your usual travel stuff

- Daily clothes and shoes. San Francisco is pretty casual so you can wear pretty much anything you like from jeans to shorts to dresses to active wear. You might bring one “dressing up” outfit in case we decide to paint the town in our finery. Since you’re staying downtown and most likely walking to most events in the evening, pick comfortable shoes for the streets.

- Equipment you’ll need if you are renting a bike: pedals (optional), helmet, bike shoes, tire levers, CO2 valve, 2 water bottles, any special nutrition and/or hydration needs that you don’t choose to purchase here in town before your ride(s).

- If you are biking: Short sleeved biking jersey, shorts, socks, cycling gloves, chamois cream and sunglasses for Friday and/or Saturday. Because weather can be variable, plan to bring a light windbreaker or waterproof jacket, arm warmers, a lightweight base layer for under your jersey, toe covers, tights or knee warmers, headband and over gloves. You may or may not actually need any of those things and most likely you’ll be peeling layers during your ride(s). You may need fleece layers if you tend to run cold as the fog is a bit chilly in the morning but make sure you could pocket it as the weather warms up pretty quickly.

- Running clothes, hat/visor, socks and shoes for the days you plan to run. Most frequently at this time of year you’ll be comfortable in a short sleeved technical top or something with light long sleeves and shorts or lighter running tights. If you bring the layers I mentioned for biking above, you can use them for running if the elements don’t cooperate.

- Bathing suit, wetsuit, cap and goggles

- HRM, watch and/or Garmin.

Counting Down

2 weeks until we hop on a plane (well two really) to make the long journey across the country. Here is what is keeping me going as I count down the sleeps:

I'm stoked to see the WW Tri folks who are able to make it this year - especially since I'm feeling so out of touch lately.

I can't wait to go shopping at the Sports Basement - Jason and I are both in dire need of swimsuits and we're holding off until we get there! Until then, the unfortunate YMCA swimmers have quite a show as we exit the pool. I think also I will look for a squid lid for cold water swimming...

I'm looking forward to bike riding on the West Coast for the first time and drinking lovely wine. I've been practicing my vin-dorance.

I'm ready to tackle the hills and see the sights while running Bay to Breakers!

Wetsuit Rental

Hi folks,

For those of you looking to rent wetsuits, or if you decide you don't want to pack something, there is a store called Sports Basement that is close to Aquatic Park. http://www.sportsbasement.com/

Sports Basement is sort of the "Triathlon Mecca" for those of us in or north of SF. They sell every possible thing you could ever want for swimming, biking, running...and for Triathlon! Clothing, shoes, bikes, gel, electrolytes, recovery, gear, gear, gear, gear.

Where REI tends to go upscale brand and image, SB looks like your parents basement....but don't let looks deceive you. SB will give you good (cutting edge) gear, at great prices, with uber-friendly people and lots of support. I love their $10 triathlon bargain bins (yup, where else can you get a pair of Segoi or Zoot Tri Shorts for $10??). There is a location in the historic Presidio (and from there you can easily ride up and over the Golden Gate Bridge). That location is also about 3 miles from Aquatic Park. I do all my open water swims in AP and we usually do our transition runs from the park, past SB, out to the bridge and back.

SB will rent you a triathlon swimmers' wetsuit for a week (their shortest duration) for $25. They have a big variety, and it's a great opportunity to try a new wetsuit type for the week. Normally they won't take reservations, but since we're working with a large contingent of "out of town folks", I spoke to Jeff in the Tri Dept and he's willing to work something out.

If you're interested, go to their website to see who they rep (although there isn't rental info on the website, the ones they sell are the same ones they rent). Then call 415-437-0100, press 6 to get to the Presidio store, then ask to be transferred to the Triathlon Department. Once you're there, ask to talk with Jeff.

Below are the specs of the bikes from Blazing Saddles. I'll let you know when I get pricing info from here as well as info from Bike N Roll.  Personally...these guys have been more responsive but it is the holidays.

Note from owner:
Pretty much you can pick up the bikes at 1095 Columbus avenue anytime between 8 AM and 6 PM, and it’s totally fine if you pick it up on Thursday afternoon so long as they’re returned by that time on Saturday afternoon to fall within the 48 hrs. The Marin Stelvio 105 and the Roubaix Expert Compact are both 2010’s, so there brand new, beautiful and ready for some good riding! The Kestrel’s have no more than 400 miles on them each, they are in mint condition and they are astonishing bikes (we’re actually renting a bunch of them out for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon a couple weekends before your event!). The prices vary for each bike, but our Marin is typically 48 for the day, so you’re getting the multiple day rental rate (43 per day, 2 days for 86). Likewise the Roubaix is typically 68 for the day, 63 for multiple days, 2 days for 126.
